Srinagar September 18: In a major strike for last 26 years of militancy in Kashmir, 17 army personnel were killed in a Fidayeen at army brigade headquarters near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri today and army has gunned down four Fidayeen who sneaked into the army base.
The number of soldiers killed in the attack had risen to 17, making it worst ever attack in Kashmir against army.
The army deployed helicopters to evacuate soldiers had been injured in the dawn attack that was followed by an hours-long gunfight. Around 20 are injured.
Army is conducting mopping operation inside the Brigade headquarters. The Fidayeen struck at around 5 a.m.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in a series of Twitter posts that he had spoken to the region’s political and military leadership and had instructed senior officials to monitor the situation. He cancelled planned trips to Russia and the United States.
