RAJOURI, May 5: At least 157 cattle belonging to five nomad families were died of lightning during thunder-sotorm in Kalakote area of district Rajouri last mid night.
Official sources said that it rained with thunderstorm in Kalakote, Nowshera and Sunderbani belt of Rajouri last night. At around 1 am, due to lighting at least 157 cattle including large number of goats and sheep got perished. Three trees in the area also damaged in lightning but members of nomad families had narrow escape as they were also camping in nerarby tents.
The incident took place near Kesar Galla in Potha area of Kalakote. The locals of the area came to know about the incident in the morning. They also took up the matter with Tehsildar and former MLA. The cattle belonged to Ghulam Hussain and Shahjehan- both brothers from Kharak Panja in Kalakote, Akhtar Ali, son of Noor Alam of Dagiani and two more families of Kalakote.
Later, during the day Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Mohammad Nazir Sheikh along with a team of officers paid a visit to Potha area to assess the cattle loss due to thunder-storm.
During visit,the Deputy Commissioner took stock of the ground position of the loss of livestock due to the natural calamity. It was informed that as many as 157 cattle belonging to five families of the nomads lost their lives in the calamity. The DC interacted with the affected families and said that district administration will provide every possible assistance to them.
The DC handed over the cheque of Rs 50,000 to each of the affected families out of the Red Cross fund. The concerned officers from Revenue Department have been directed to start the process of completing required formalities so that the compensation in terms of loss of cattle damage could be provided to the affected families.
