147 drug peddlers arrested in Anantnag, 153 cases registered

SRINAGAR, May 1: The police claimed to have registered 153 cases under the NDPS Act in Anantnag and arrested 147 accused during the first four months of 2026 as part of an intensified anti-drug drive in the district.
Officials said more than 372 kilograms of contraband was seized during multiple operations, with an estimated market value of over Rs 48.2 lakh.
The recoveries include 170.995 kg of cannabis powder, 185.001 kg of ganja, 1.515 kg of charas, 14.574 kg of poppy straw, 160 grams of brown sugar, 38 grams of heroin and 750 intoxicant tablets.
Police said illegal narcotic cultivation spread over nearly 190 marlas of land was also destroyed to curb supply at the source.
As part of enforcement measures, 21 vehicles were seized in connection with drug trafficking cases, while 10 registration certificates and nine driving licences were cancelled.
