REASI, Apr 2: Electoral awareness campaign and enrollment drive launched in the district has registered record 16% increase of voters with 26,000 new voters added to the existing voter list of 1,68,00 voters in three Assembly Constituencies of Gulabgarh, Reasi and Gool Arnas.
The enrollment drive aided by a massive awareness campaign also registered a higher number of women voters and nomadic voters. During Phase-I of electoral awareness campaign Jashn-e-Jamhuriat/Reasi Celebrating Democracy, a total of 9439 voters were enrolled which included 4559 male and 4780 female. The campaign also aimed at removing discrepancies in the electoral roll deleted 3203 voters from electoral rolls in case of voters having shifted to other constituencies or died during last one year.
In second and third phase of campaign under continuous updation started on February 1, 2014, more than 16000 voters were enrolled in 54 days up to March 26, which was last date of enrollment as voter. Out of 16992 voters added in 54 days long drive, 9404 are women and 7588 are men. Special women enrollment drive at household level and camps at village level resulted in high registration of women in remote areas. Over all 14184 female voters and 12147 female voters have been enrolled during the awareness come enrollment drive.
Assembly Constituencies of Gulabgarh, Reasi and Arnas have registered 6690, 7265 and 3037 voters respectively since February 1. These voters have been enrolled for 301 polling stations. Election Commission of India has also sanctioned one new polling stations for district and after culmination of election process more polling stations will be carved out as there has been much increase in voters.
District Election Officer (Deputy Commissioner) Reasi, Dr Shahid Iqbal informed that during 7 months of electoral awareness campaign a series of initiatives were launched which included Gram Sabhas, household survey and campaign, door-to-door signature campaign, green vote plantation drive, women centric awareness programmes, photo exhibitions and electoral conferences.
Registration of 16000 voters in 54 days indicated that there were a huge number of voters not aware and educated about electoral process, which mostly included the nomadic community and women in remote areas. He added that with 100% electoral awareness in the district the desired elector to population ratio of 56% has been crossed.
