SHOTOPA/KARGIL, Apr 3: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway 1-D will be opened for vehicular traffic by the last week of this month, according to Col, P Kumar, CO, Project Vijayak.
Talking to Excelsior, Col P Kumar, CO, Project VIJAYAK of Border Roads Organization, told that his team has started the snow clearance work on time on 10th of last month but due to the heavy snowfall after one day created the problem. He said that his team had to restart the clearance work from Matayen and this time the snow accumulation is much more than last year which was even creating problem in locating the road.
However, our team has reached at Machoyi, which is 26 km from Drass and we will soon complete the task assigned to us, he added.
He also appreciated the efforts of locals in clearing snow as according to him without them the task was not easy.
Terming the Zojjila pass as an important link (lifeline for Ladakh particularly Kargil), Kumar said his team is doing their best to reach the target before time but he regretted that due to the heavy snowfall in the 2nd week of March, there will remain possibilities of Avalanches after the snow clearance which is the biggest challenge to face.
Earlier, Project VIJAYAK started the snow clearance work on March 10, 2014, which had to stop due to heavy snowfall.
