Youth shot dead, jawan injured

Srinagar, Sept 24: Militants tonight shot dead a youth in the forest area of Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district while an Army jawan was injured on the Line of Control (LoC) in Macchil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district during an operation.
A police official said here that at around 9:15 pm, two militants barged into the house of Mohammad Iqbal Khan son of late Ghulam Mohammad Khan at Cherihar Kawool forest village of Sopore and brought him outside his house.
The gunmen fired at him outside his house leaving him in a pool of blood. He was removed to hospital but succumbed on the way.
Soon after the incident, Army and police cordoned off the whole area and launched a man hunt to nab the attackers.
An Army spokesman said here today that an Army jawan was injured during an operation that was launched along the LoC in Macchil sector of Kupwara district yesterday after Army foiled an infiltration bid by militants and killed one infiltrator.
The spokesman said that Army operation in the area is going on since yesterday. “Today one Army jawan was injured when militants fired at him from across the LoC on the troops who are carrying out search operation in the area”, he added.
The body of the 60 year old militant who was killed yesterday on the LoC was today handed over to locals in Kalaroos area of Kupwara after his autopsy was conducted at Kupwara Sub-district hospital. Locals refused to bury the body initially and later in the evening after police persuaded them he was laid to rest.
In the meantime, Army busted a militant hideout at Feryael near Line of Control in Tanghdar sector of Kupwara district today.
Sources said that based on specific information Army’s 20 RR during a raid busted a militant hideout and recovered arms and ammunition from the hideout. The recovered weapons and ammunition include two AK 56 rifles, two pistols with two Magazines, five rifle grenades, three Chinese hand grenades, nine RPG rounds, one binocular and a wireless set.
Police in South Kashmir district of Shopian today claimed to have arrested an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of a militant organization who was also involved in a grenade throwing case and recovered ammunition from him.
A police spokesman said here that Shopian Police along with 62 RR and 14 Battalion of CRPF arrested an OGW, Zakir Ahmad Malik resident of Alishapora, Zainapora and recovered AK ammunition from him.
Police said that Zakir was involved in grenade throwing on Army at Imam Sahib on two days ago. “The Motor bike that was used by Zakir while hurling the grenade was also seized”, police added.
A case (FIR No. 60/2013 under Section 3/4 ES act, 307 RPC and 7/27 IAA) was registered against him in Police Station Zainapora and investigations have been started.
