Youth Parliament organised to promote ethical voting

REASI, Mar 21: District administration organised a “Youth Parliament” to promote ethical and informed voting and spread the information about special measures taken for forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Students from 17 educational institutions participated in the event which was organised under Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation campaign Jashn-e-Jamhuriat.
The mock session of Parliament discussed more than 100 odd questions of public importance which included steps taken by district administration on directions of Election Commission of India for conduct of free and fair elections, promote ethical and informed voting, measures taken for electoral awareness and participation, steps to facilitate differently abled and senior citizen voters, special drive for nomad voters, women participation, prospective voters; provisions of Model Code of Conduct , expenditure by political parties and mechanism in place to check various types of practices.
Members of ruling parties and Opposition parties as well as independent candidates exhibited exemplary discipline and respect for the rules of the Parliament. Walk-outs were also seen during the Youth Parliament session. Female students outnumbered the males in participation. Members of the mock cabinet replied to all the questions with authentic and detailed information. Senior officers of the district administration and heads of educational institutions were sitting in officers’ gallery while print and electronic media persons also covered the event.
The Youth Parliament was organised with idea of popularizing the electoral practices among youth, create awareness about provisions of the election laws, rules and regulations, and elicit greater response of youth towards informed electoral participation and linking youth as stakeholders in democracy.
Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Tilak Raj Shastri and Principal Degree College, Prof Ajeet Angral organised the event. The rehearsal session was attended by District Election Officer Dr Shahid Iqbal and ADC Rajinder Singh Tara among other officers.
