JAMMU, Dec 25: Organized by Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture & Languages (JKAACL), the valedictory function at conclusion of first ever five-day J&K young women artist workshop at the Kala Kendra, here today, was marked by deep sense of appreciation by the 10 participating young women artists drawn from two Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
Conducted by Sunanda Khajuria, the Painthal born freelance painter based in New Delhi, the workshop provided an opportunity to young artists work together and exchange concepts, working methods and also strengthen their resolve to continue the pursuit of creative painting despite of socio-cultural and other constrains like the lack of post-graduate courses in Visual arts in Universities of the State.
The participating artists included besides Sunanda Khajuria, Massarat Mehboob, Shahana Parveen, Siresh, Shakti Kumari, Anuradha Devi, Nusrat Zahoor Shah, Renu Bala and Jitendra Kour.
Speaking on the occasion, Khalid Bashir, Secretary, (JKAACL), looking at the heartfelt response said that the workshop would be made annual feature so that young women artists from different parts of the State can work together in presence of artists of international and national exposure. He said that JKAACL would hold more of such programme in future to promote contemporary visual artists in the State. Dr Lalit Gupta, art historian and resource person also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, the morning session started with Sunanda Khajuria presentation of works done during foreign residencies at countries like Italy, Tanzania, Russia, China etc and how these have helped her to evolve her pictorial language and technique. It was followed by presentation on Indian Contemporary Art and Feminism, by Aditi Gupta, research scholar in visual arts atJawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Highlights of the workshop marked by interactive sessions, lectures, slide shows of works by individual articipants, was the interaction with Gokul Dembi, one of the senior most artists of the State.
Today’s function was attended by well known artists/teachers Harsh Vardhan, Rohit Verma, Bhushan Kesar and Dr Sanajy Sharma. Number of art students and members of civil society were also present.
