15 people are dead and 19 injured in a tragic road accident in which a SRTC bus fell down the gorge near Digdol. The victims dead or injured, all were the pilgrims headed to trek the path to holy cave of Swami Amarnath. Recurrent tragic road accidents have now become a regular feature and people are getting immune to it. More than hindered pilgrims to Swami Amarnath cave have died during the journey. The Supreme Court has taken suo moto action of issuing notices to the State Government demanding reasons why the death toll has shown upward graph. All this makes the entire issue of pilgrimage very contentious one. This forces us to make rather unconventional and perhaps also slightly out of the way suggestions that firstly the Government impose a ban on the number of pilgrims to the shrine of Amarnath ji, and secondly, have two permanent drivers for SRTC buses plying on Jammu-Srinagar road. The drivers shall take their turn of driving with an internal arrangement. These two steps are important to reduce the frequency of road accidents. The drivers of SRTC should be given the option of halting at a nearby station in case of long delays owing to road jams or blockades.
