Srinagar May 12: The Water Workers’ Coordination Committee today threatened a 72-hour hunger strike if their demands, which include the release of withheld salaries and the proper handover of PHE divisions to Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), are not fulfilled.
During a press conference here, committee president Sajad Parray said that the Government ordered in February that all five PHE divisions under the jurisdiction of Srinagar be handed over to the SMC. “But on a pick and choose basis, only 500 employees have been shifted to the SMC out of 1352 daily wagers. This shows the Government’s double standards,” he explained.
He said that the order stated that other people should be transferred to the SMC on deputation, but this has not happened despite the court ruling in their favour. “Both court and government orders are being violated,” he said.
He added that the order also stated that a separate budget head would be opened for the employees, which would include all funds, but this has not happened. He said that the salaries of daily wagers have been pending for the past four months. “We want the government to implement the separate budget head announced in government order 13 in order to ensure timely salary.”
He has threatened a 72-hour hunger strike starting on May 17th if the government fails to meet the demands of the committee.
