Srinagar, Feb 11: The Indian System of Medicine today celebrated 5th World Unani Day to spread awareness about healthcare delivery through Unani system of medicine.
In this regard, an event was organized at the auditorium hall of Dental College Srinagar by Directorate of Indian System of Medicine (AYUSH) of Jammu and Kashmir. This year’s theme was “Unani Medicine opportunities and challenges in times of COVID 19.”

On the occasion, the Director Ayush, Dr. Mohan Singh emphasized on the need to adopt Unani medicine in daily life. “People should use this old age medicine system for the treatment of common ailments,” he said. He suggested broadening the use of the Ayush system in the region by involving NGOs, adminstartion and other related departments.
He also announced the beginning of the first batch of Bachelors in Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) course Government at Unani Medical College (GUMC), Kashmir from the academic session of 2020-21.
Other speakers highlighted the importance of celebrating the day in spreading the awareness about the AYUSH system, ” people should take a pledge to make the AYUSH system of medicine an integral part of their daily life as it helps to boost the immune system and prevents so many diseases,” Sajad Ahmad Sujah, Assistant director ISM JK, said.
World Unani day is observed to pay tribute to Hakim Ajmal Khan for his contribution in the sustained development of the Unani System of medicine across the world.
The event witnessed participation of mass following the prescribed SOP’s of COVID 19 at the venue.
