JAMMU, June 5: World Environment Day was observed across Jammu province with zeal and enthusiasm.
In order to observe World Environment Day, a function was held in the Centre for Biodiversity Studies of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, during which scholars pledged to launch campiagn for saving environment. The function was chaired by Prof GH Dar, Fellow Mahatma Gandhi Chair in the CBS. Prof IA Hamal, Vice Chancellor in his message said that present generations should save environment for future generations. Dr Susheel Verma, Associate Prof, Dr AA Shah, Associate Prof and Prof GH Dar highlighted the importance of the day. Mamta Bhat, Assistant Prof, presented vote of thanks.
Government College for Women, Parade in collaboration with Jammu Consumer Council observed World Environment Day, in which students from various colleges took part. Prof Hemla Aggarwal, Former DGP MM Khajuria, Dr Nirmal Kamal, vice president, Jammu Consumers Council and Prof BL Koul asked the participants to plant more and more trees to save the environment.
To observe World Environment Day, a tree plantation drive was organised by the Environment Unit of MIER College of Education, in which Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIER, Dr Adit Gupta, Joint Director, Monika Bajaj, incharge, Environment Unit along with students and faculty members planted 50 saplings in the MIER campus.
Vimal Muni College of Education, Ramgarh organised an Environment Awareness rally, in which students took part actively. The rally flagged of by Anu Mahajan, Chairperson of the college. While speaking, Anu Mahajan threw light on the importance of conservation of forest vis-à-vis environment.
Environmental Club, Sai Shyam College of Education organised an extension lecture on “Water as Dwindling Resource and Carbon Trading” to observe World Environment Day. Dr Ajay Bharti, Asstt Prof, Water Management, SKUAST, was the guest speakers, who spoke about the cause of dwindling position of water and its effects on bio-diversity. Chairman of the College CL Tickoo and Dr Usha Tickoo, Principal, were also present.
Centre for Cooperative Management Jammu observed World Environment Day. General Secretary of the Cooperative Union was the chief guest, who while speaking said that survival of life on the earth in dependent on the conservation of the environment. SK Sharma, Principal, Indu Magotra, Vice Principal, Kuldeep Singh, senior consultant, Usha Dutta, Veena Raina and trainees also expressed their views.
Delhi Public School, Udhampur organised Environment Month, during which various activities including plantation drive, dramatization, poster making, slogan writing events were organised. Beside this, the students were made aware regarding the need for protection of earth. Dr JC Gupta, Chairman, LMC and Dr Anju Pandey, Principal also expressed their views.
GLS Public School organised a rally on the eve of World Environment Day. Drawing, quiz competition and plantation drive were also organised. Students and faculty also planted sapling on the occasion.
Institution of Engineers celebrated World Environment Day. A seminar on the theme topic “Think Eat Save” was organized in which large number of engineers took part. Dr CM Seth, Chairperson, WWF India, was the chief guest and Ashok Kumar Gupta, Former Chairman of Jammu Local Centre of Institution of engineers presided over. SC Thukral, PK Nanda, BL Rawal, Sewa Ram, and Rajesh Kumar Angural presented power point presentations on the theme topic. Rabinder Shekher, Secretary conducted the proceedings of the seminar.
On the eve of World Environment Day, Department of Environment and Remote Sensing organised an environmental awareness rally, in which students and teachers drawn from various institutions took part. A painting competition on the theme “Think Eat Save” was also organised, in which Vikas, Shubam Thappa and Vishal emerged winners in junior section, whereas in senior section, Suman, Ayushi Talwar and Sonali Choudhary claimed top three positions. VK Raina, Usha Anand, Principal, Environment Educational Institute, Kartar Chand, Range Officer, Hency Gurtoo, Senior Asstt of the department threw light on the importance of the day.
Sangam Theatre group, Reasi staged a play A Play “Payasi Dharti” and also organised, Painting and poster making competitions, rally, seminar, seed bank, preparation of bio diversity register and other activities on the eve of World Environment Day, in which students from various institutions took part. Kaka Ram Dogra, Zonal education office was the chief Guest, while BS Sharma presided over the function. In Painting competition, Anam, Mohit and Rajesh secured first, second and third positions respectively, whereas, in seminar, Rahul, Poonam and Veena emerged winners and in poster making competition, Ashish, Gunjan and Vijay claimed top three ranks respectively.
World Environment Day was celebrated by Berger Paints, Samba. District Officer, Pollution Control Board Anil Sharma along with Environment Engineer Bharat Chaudhary and Devashish Nath, Factory Head briefed about the importance of the day.
Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited observed World Environment Day in collaboration with State Pollution Control Board (SPCB). Arun Kumar Tikoo, Chairman, SPCB along with Sajjad Mufti, Regional Director and TS Chib, District Officer planted saplings and also distributed prizes among the winners of slogan writing and painting competitions organised between the employees of HCCBPL.
Global Gandhi Family (GGF) organised a function to observe World Environment Day. On the occasion, Ravi Kumar Kesar, Additional Pr, Chief Conservator of Forest was awarded with “Gandhi Sewa Medal” by SP Verma, President, GGF along with members of GGF. RL Bharti, Retd Pr Chief Conservator of Forest, Roshan Jaggi, SP Verma and Ravi Kumar Kesar explained the need of afforestation to save the humanity.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kathua under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu observed World Environment Day at village Said-Sohal, in which a large number of farmers participated. Dr Amrish Vaid, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Kathua, Dr AP Singh, SMS, Agronomy, Dr Brijesh Ajrawat, SMS, Agriculture Extension, Dr Vishal Mahajan, SMS, Agroforestry , Dr Neerja Sharma, SMS, Horticulture and Dr Anamica Jamwal, SMS, Plant Protection, Shalini Sharma expressed their views regarding conservation of environment. Officers from State Forest Department, Kulwant Slathia, Rajesh Gupta and Varinder Slathia also participated.
District Legal Services Authority, Ramban under the chairmanship of MA Chowdhary, Chairman District Legal Services Authority observed World Environment Day at Government Higher Secondary School, Ramban. Students in their speeches highlighted the need to preserve the environment. President Bar Association, AR Mushtaq and Principal Higher Secondary School, Ramban also threw light on the subject. Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ramban MR Chak laid emphasis to make every endeavour to keep the environment neat and clean.
Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, based at Bhaderwah organised a Debate on “Green Economy” under the aegis of the Counter Insurgency Force (Delta) to observe World Environment Day at Government Senior Secondary School, Bhaderwah. Incharge Principal of the school Devraj Rathore presented prizes to the participants.
