World Environment Day celebrated

JAMMU, June 4: World Environment Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal.
Advisor to Governor, K Vijay Kumar today said that human actions in the past have threatened the environment and damage has already been caused to the nature to a greater extent. But our united efforts can make the situation better thereby contributing to have clean environment and making this world more beautiful to live.
The Advisor who was the chief guest on the occasion said this while addressing the gathering especially the students participating in the World Environment Day 2019 celebrations being organized by the Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day was “Beat Air Pollution”.
Financial Commissioner (FC) Finance Arun Mehta was the guest of honor on the occasion. Commissioner Secretary Forest MK Dwivedi, Chairman JKPCB Ravi Kesar, Director EE&R B Sidhartha Kumar, CCF Kashmir Farooq Gillani, MD JKSFC Vasu Yadav, other senior officers of Forest and its allied departments, large numbers of students were present during the celebrations.
K Vijay Kumar also distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions held during the week long celebrations in Srinagar. Two publications of the Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing Department were also released by the Advisor Kumar on the occasion.
J&K State Pollution Control Board in collaboration with 92.7 Big FM today observed World Environment day on the theme “Beat Air Pollution”.
The SPCB organized four days door-to-door awareness campaign involving students from various schools to create awareness among common man regarding consequences of air pollution besides highlighting several small efforts that can be done to prevent further rise in air pollution. This awareness campaign covered about 2000 households.
Regional Director, J&K SPCB, Jammu, Dr Syed Nadeem Hussain, stressed that planting more trees is directly linked to fresh air availability and reduction in dust pollution/toxic gases present in the air.
He called upon all citizens to work collectively towards controlling pollution thus ensuring availability of clean air for the posterity.
Later, the final event was celebrated at Rajinder Park where general public was involved in this awareness campaign through presentation of Nukkad Nataks on air pollution.
The event was culminated with distribution of certificates of appreciation by Dr Yashpaul Salgotra, Head Laboratories, J&K SPCB, Jammu among all the participating schools and students for making this campaign a grand success.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing J&K organized Inter School Symposium/Painting Competition at Sin Light High School, Utter Behani Samba. The prizes in the shape of trophies were awarded to the meritorious students. The Eco friendly material like cotton bags, jute bags and wicker baskets were distributed among the students and staff of different schools. Abhishek Padha, a painting expert evaluated the painting sheets and made the judgment. Kuldeep Kumar, DFO, Environment and Remote Sensing along with his staff organized the event.
World Environment Day was celebrated in the Government Degree College for Women, Kathua. A plantation drive was organized by the Department of EVS and Geography. Principal of the college Prof Assa Ram Sharma inaugurated the plantation drive by planting a neem sapling. On the occasion, Dr Naresh Sharma, Dr Deepak Pathania, Dr. Rakesh Jasrotia, Dr Gotam Lalotra, Dr Vaidshno, Prof Bipan and students of the college planted sapling of various trees.
Students and staff of Dewan Devi Higher Secondary School celebrated World Environment Day in the school premises with great enthusiasm. Students of the school were involved in different activities depicting Environment Day in their scrap books. The tiny tots planted saplings in the school premises. The teachers also helped them in this activity. On the occasion, Principal of school expressed his views.
On occasion of World Environment Day, Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Private Limited launched “Save Environment, Save Birds and Save Water” campaign at Gole Market Park in Gandhi Nagar here in collaboration with State Floriculture Department. The drive was taken with full dynamism under the leadership of RK Dhar, Regional Operating Officer, wherein about 30 employees of the company participated. Officer from Floriculture Department Dr Rabia Bano Khan alongwith their staff members were also present during the programme and also delivered a knowledgeable lecture on importance of environment.
