JAMMU, Mar 18: A workshop on ‘Women’s Empowerment: Opportunities and Challenges’ was organized by the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, here today.
The workshop was attended by a large number of students, faculty members and the members of civil society.
In her inaugural address, Prof Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, JU, spoke about ranges of issues concerning women’s empowerment. She said that the women studies help us to delimit the binaries of our thought and it is important to move away from generalized perspective to more specific ones. “The debate on how women are situated and placed in contemporary society should be the main focus of our academic and research,” she added.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Prof Suman Jamwal, Director, Centre for Women Studies, spoke about the rationale of holding the workshop.
Dr Priyanka Katoch of the Centre for Women Studies offered the vote of thanks.
During the first working session of the workshop, Prof Rita Jitendra was the chairperson. Yogita Yadav, a Journalist and also recipient of Gyan Peeth Award, Monica Jamwal (Journalist) and Dr Anupama Vohra, Associate Professor, DDE, JU, were the resource persons.
The second session was on “Women, Law and Governance” which was chaired by Hafiza Muzzafar, former Director of National Mission for Empowerment of Women, J&K Government. Radha Sharma (Advocate), Inspector Shakti Devi (J&K Police and also recipient of International peacekeeping Award) were the key resources persons.
The last session was a panel discussion on “Women empowerment: Prospects and Problems”. The panelists were Prof Pankaj Srivastava, Dean, Student Welfare, Prof Jasbir Singh, (Chairperson NSS, University Campus) and Prof Suman Jamwal, Director, Centre for Women studies. The discussion was moderated by Dr Shyam Narayan Lal.
The workshop concluded with vote of thanks by Saranjit Kaur of the Centre for Women’s Studies.
