Workshop on ‘Gender Sensitization’ held at JU

JAMMU, Feb 8: The Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC) of Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL) in collaboration with Department of Students Welfare (DSS), University of Jammu organized a one day workshop on ‘Gender Sensitization’ at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium here today.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof RD Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu. Nayeema Ahmad Mahjoor, Chairperson, J&K State women Commission was the guest of honour. Prof Satnam Kour, Dean Students Welfare, DSW and Dr Kavita Suri, Director DLL, were also present at the inaugural function.
In her welcome address, Dr Kavita Suri highlighted the activities under taken by Equal Opportunity Cell, while Prof Satnam Kour, in her address, stressed on the role of workshops and programmes which will help in sensitization.
Nayeema Mahjoor in her keynote address said that women are facing discrimination and exploitation at all stages starting from childhood, adolescence, married women and at old age as well. She said that there is a need to change the attitude and not the roles. The J&K State
Women’s Commission, she said, is already doing lot of activities for the betterment of the women of J&K.
Prof R D Sharma, in his address, emphasized on the need to change the mindset of the people. He spoke in detail about various impediments in the life of a girl child starting from foeticide, infanticide, drop outs, discrimination, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dowry etc.
Gender experts who were special resource persons for the workshop were Prof Poonam Dhawan, former, DAA, JU, Prof Neeru Sharma, Head, Department of Home Science, JU, Dr Savita Nayyar, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Law, and Dr Kavita Suri.
The workshop concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Rewa Khajuria, Counsellor, DLL while, Sonakshi Ganotra, a PG student of Education department conducted the proceedings of the programme.
