SRINAGAR, Feb 27: A woman today died allegedly after a lady doctor carried out an abortion at her private clinic outside Sub District Hospital (SDH) Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
The death of the woman sparked protests in the town, who demanded the arrest of the doctor.
“Mahmoda Jan daughter of Ghulam Mohiudin of Gulshanpora, Tral, died due the carelessness of the female doctor. She should be arrested and her private clinic closed,” the protestors said.
Block Medical Officer Tral, Dr Shakeel Ahmad said the victim had gone to the private clinic some two weeks ago to abort her six month foetus.
“But as her bleeding didn’t stop, her relatives shifted her to SHMS, Srinagar. There, she was in comma for 13 days till she died,” Dr Shakeel said
Dr Shakeel said he has filed a detailed report of the incident and submitted it to Chief Medical Officer Pulwama and action will be taken against the clinic owner and the lady doctor.
“We carried out a thorough investigation into the incident and found that the lady doctor was not working in any Government institute, but was running a private clinic where she carried illegal abortions,” he said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Awantipora, Abdul Waheed said the police have registered a complaint from deceased relatives and started an inquest proceeding under Section 174. “We have conducted postmortem of the woman and the body was handed over to her family for burial,” he said.
The SP said they will take action against the doctor and the clinic owner after they receive the postmortem report from the Forensic Laboratory. “Whosoever found guilty would not be spared” Wahid said.
