Srinagar, Jan 9: A woman delivered her baby in hospital premises in Kupwara district as the hospital was closed till 10:30 a.m.
Ashia Begum wife of Shazad Ahmad Mir of Sarmarg Rajwara, crying with labour pain, was rushed to the nearby New Type Primary Health Center (NTPHC) at Kukroosa in Handwara, by her family at 8 a.m. today.
“When we reached the hospital we were shocked to find that not a single employee was present in the hospital and then with the support of an elderly local maid the woman gave birth to a baby. It was a miraculous escape for her,” said the family members of Ashia.
The unavailability of the doctors and the paramedical staff at the hospital angered the locals, who staged a protest and raised slogans against the Health Department to deliver healthcare facilities to remote areas.
“NTPHC started its 24-hour work some seven years ago and during these years it saved the lives of many critical patients, but unfortunately due to political pressure its operating timing was reduced to day service only,” residents said.
Incharge Block Medical Officer, Vilgam, said that it was an NTPHC, but said no facility was provided to the centre yet from the Government.
He said after receiving information about this case the employees were told to reach immediately to the hospital and take care of the patient. “Our team checked both mother and baby, and both were normal and they were discharged in the evening,” the BMO said.
