Sir,
Though the railways boast of a lot of steps taken to make the journey via local trains more women friendly, when we closely look at how comfortable women actually feel while travelling by DMU local train (Pathankot to Udhampur via Jammu) on daily basis reveals altogether a new story. The real problem actually arises at the ticket counter of Jammu Tawi railway station. It is a herculean task for ladies from all the sects of the society to get a ticket. It is clearly mentioned on the wall above the ticket counter that there is no separate line for ladies.
It seems as railways authorities are least bothered about the safety and comfort of its women passengers. Instead, they want them to be sandwiched between the males in a single line. So, in such situation either a woman has to compromise her comfort zone or request some decent male passenger in line to buy a ticket on her behalf. Every time women have to face extreme humiliation to get a ticket by standing in a common line in which majority are male passengers.
It’s high time that higher authorities of railway department must pay attention to address this problem of women to deliver their best service.
Yours etc…
Hema
