Agreed, this time we are passing through an unparalled and unmatched type of situation on account of the pandemic of COVID-19 and most of the attention of the medical and health care is concentrated on stopping the spread of the virus and treating the suspected and proven +ve cases on utmost priority but what about the non -COVID patients suffering from various ailments ? We have reports that in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura Srinagar, scant or no attention is given to regular non- Covid patients numbering hundreds, thus putting them in tight spot. Even patients suffering from cancer and others needing transplant too are facing neglect due to most of the resources ploughed into attending to COVID- 19 patients.
Let the facts as they are, be not kept under any cover. Thousands of patients suffering from various ailments are attended to in various hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir daily and despite that, the gap between the increasing number of patients and insufficient medical care is otherwise being felt. Moreover, thousands of patients not requiring hospitalisation but otherwise suffering from serious lifelong diseases are treated daily at private clinics, even many operated upon in urgent cases of surgeries. That way, while the burden on hospital is somewhat lessened , at the same time, the needy get the treatment. This time, since most of such facilities are not available and movement of people too is curtailed , the brunt obviously shall fall on the hospitals alone. Closing or increasingly slicing such vital facilities at hospitals, closing even OPDs was bound to give space to and accentuate other problems. The administration must look into this vital aspect and resolve it suitably.
