Week long celebrations of Software Freedom Day commence at SMVDU

KATRA, Sept 22: Week long celebrations of Software Freedom Day commenced at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, here on Monday.
Software Freedom Day is a worldwide celebration of Free & Open Source and Software (FOSS),   which  is a very good alternative to the paid software and is available free of cost. FOSS communities worldwide work in collaboration and anyone can contribute to the FOSS creation. Being an alma mater of numerous Open Source Contributors and Supporters, SMVDU is a part of SFD 2015 celebrations at 124 different venues worldwide this year.
Inauguration of the week long event was done by the Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof Sudhir K Jain in the presence of Dr Ajay Kaul, Director, School of Computer Science & Engineering & Convener of the event and Anuj Mahajan, Assistant Professor School of Computer Science & Engineering.
In the inaugural address, Prof Sudhir K Jain highlighted the importance of FOSS software in the technological era. He also motivated students to organize and participate more in these types of events.
Dr Ajay Kaul enlightened the audience with the knowledge on FOSS and the vision for the School of CSE.
The Inaugural was followed by an introductory workshop on “What is FOSS”, taken by Atul Mishra, a final year CSE student. He introduced the importance of FOSS, why should we use it and opportunities for students in this field.
The SFD celebrations will include workshops on Linux, GitHub, Network Security, Android, Web Technologies, and Python along with competitions by students and a special Guest Lecture by  Navdeep Singh Gill, Founder & CEO at XenonStack, RayCare and Founder at Spartan Startups X.
The goal of weeklong celebrations is to sensitize the students by conducting workshops, competitions and talks  to let them know about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in Government, at home, and in business — in short everywhere, and to spread the message that SMVDU is the leading technical University in J&K.
