SRINAGAR, Sept 13: J&K Innovative Foundation for Transforming Society (JKIFTS) organized a scientific webinar lecture titled “Lumpy Skin Disease: an emerging threat to dairy industry”, here today.
The webinar was moderated by Dr Tasaduk Hussain Itoo (medico, educator cum noted columnist), while Dr Abrar-Ul-Haq Wani (Assistant Professor cum Junior Scientist Department of Medicine, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University Ludhiana, Punjab) was the chief speaker and Muhammad Taha Fayaz Shah, foundation member was coordinator of the program.
Dr Tasaduk Hussain Itoo said that Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is emerging as a serious health challenge in several parts of India among domestic cattle, causing multiple deaths and the cases have been reported in Jammu & Kashmir as well, followed by a detailed scientific awareness cum research based presentation on the topic by Dr Abrar Ul Haq Wani, wherein he highlighted the various aspects of the LSD like its current prevalence, causation, epidemiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and management, prevention, modes of transmission, its economic implications on farmers financial stability and dairy industry.
Dr Wani emphasised that rising incidence of LSD cases in J&K are thought to result from the ongoing procurement and transportation of livestock from outside States, and advised that the trade should be put on halt for a specified period of time; adding that there is no evidence so far that the virus causes any disease in humans.
Dr Wani said that vaccination forms a cornerstone in the control of LSD with “Goat pox vaccine” being most effective and readily available, adding that there is a need to stay adherent to other precautionary and safety measures.
