Weatherman forecasts snow on Dec 27

Srinagar, Dec 22: The Weatherman has forecast snowfall in Kashmir on December 27 as another Western Disturbance is approaching the region next week.
A Meteorological Depart-ment official said that a snow spell of greater intensity is most likely to occur during Dec 26 evening to December 28 forenoon) with main activity on 27th December. “Except this, the official said, “there’s no forecast of any major snow spell in both J&K and Ladakh in December”, he said.

Earlier, the Weatherman had forecast snowfall in Kashmir between 23rd and 24th December. “Due to a feeble Western Disturbance, weather is most likely to remain generally cloudy in both J&K and Ladakh with chances of light snowfall at scattered places in the hills of Kashmir, Kargil district (Zojila-Drass, Parkachik- Penzila) and over hilly areas of Jammu region during 23rd and 24th December,” he added.
The MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 1.8 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 2.8 degree Celsius. It was after several days that the mercury was recorded above normal of minus 2.0 degree Celsius for this time of the year.
Kashmir is presently under the 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as Chillai Kalan, which started on December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long Chillai Bachha.
The Mercury at Gulmarg settled at minus 4.0 degree Celsius against minus 5.0 degree Celsius the previous night. It was 1.8 degree Celsius above normal for the famous resort which is presently teeming with visitors.
Qazigund had a low of minus 3.0 degree Celsius against minus 2.6 degree Celsius the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.2 degree Celsius against minus 3.7 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.9 degree Celsius against minus 3.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kupwara recorded a minimum of minus 2.9 degree Celsius against minus 3.8 degree Celsius the previous night.
Leh had a low of minus 12.4 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 13.9 degree Celsius while Kargil recorded minimum of minus 11.3 degree Celsius and Drass recorded a low of minus 17.4 degree Celsius.
