SRINAGAR : With the improvement in weather, threat of snow avalanches in upper reaches in Jammu and Kashmir has also increased following heavy to very heavy snowfall during the past three days.
There was also danger of snow avalanche and landslides on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, particularly during the day when the sky remains clear.
An official spokesman said high danger avalanche warnings were issued for avalanche-prone areas in Bandipora district. There is also medium danger avalanche threat in avalanche-prone areas in Baramulla, Kupwara, Uri, in north Kashmir, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama in south Kashmir and Ganderbal in central Kashmir and Kargil in Ladakh region following heavy snowfall recently.
He said deputy commissioners of these districts have been asked to issue weather advisory to the people in their respective district advising them not to venture out of their homes.
The officer concerned have been asked to inform people to temporarily evacuate the locations under fall line of avalanche and heavy snowfall.
It is enjoined upon all Deputy Commissioners, all concerned Head of Departments and District Superintendents of Police to activate their manpower and machinery and to be in a state of preparedness, so as to minimise disruption of essential services, including road connectivity, health services etc.
The Deputy Commissioners are also directed to take all precautionary measures, so as to avert any untoward incident. People have been advised to take extra precautions while moving on slopes in case of any emergency. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal Sarmad Hafeez has advised to people living in upper reaches including Sonamarg, Sarbal, Nelgrath, Gagangeer, Razin, Naranag and adjoining areas not to venture into slopes of forest and hilly areas which are avalanche-prones. A joint team comprising Deputy Commissioner Kulgam and officers from Police, CRPF and Army visited avalanche prone areas of Dodikuchan Damhal Hanjipora Pora. It was informed that a group of 10 volunteers have been identified in each such location, who will be given training in rescue operation, besides four shelter centres have been identified where arrangements for stocking of ration and first aid facilities shall be made available in case of any eventuality.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed on co-ordination among the concerned departments to enhance preparedness, adding that all available equipments need to be pooled at the shelter centres for their ready use in the wake of any avalanche disaster.
