NEW DELHI, May 13: Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi on Wednesday met her Sri Lankan counterpart Saroja Savithri Paulraj and discussed issues related to women empowerment, child welfare and nutrition.
The meeting, held during the Sri Lankan delegation’s study visit to India, also focused on women-led development, gender equality, maternal and child welfare, care economy initiatives and women’s leadership in governance, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The Sri Lankan delegation, which included members of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus of Sri Lanka, was briefed on India’s flagship schemes for women and children, including Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
The discussions also highlighted the use of digital governance tools and technology-enabled systems for improving service delivery related to women’s safety, empowerment, nutrition and welfare.
During the interaction, Devi said the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has adopted a women-led development approach, recognising women as equal stakeholders in the country’s growth and development journey.
“We discussed women empowerment, child welfare, nutrition, and women-led development, while sharing India’s transformative initiatives under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi,” Devi said in a post on X.
She further highlighted the government’s continued commitment towards strengthening institutional mechanisms and welfare frameworks for women and children.
Paulraj appreciated India’s initiatives for women and child welfare and expressed interest in learning from India’s experiences and best practices in the sector.
“Paulraj appreciated the progressive and impactful initiatives undertaken by the government of India for the empowerment and welfare of women and children. She acknowledged India’s holistic and inclusive approach towards women-led development and expressed interest in learning from India’s experiences and best practices in the sector,” the statement read.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening institutional cooperation and knowledge-sharing in the field of women and child development, it added. (PTI)
