Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘CM’s announcement on bio-medical waste mgmt projects gathering dust’ DE June 24.
The failure to set up waste management projects in the twin cities of the State-Jammu and Srinagar reflects the non-seriousness of the State authorities towards keeping environment pollution free.
It is becoming an uphill task to dispose of huge quantities of waste which is generated in our cities day in and day out. Since this waste is not treated scientifically, it is likely to pose severe challenges to people and to those who are supposed to dispose it of. Dumping it in the open in land fills some kilometers away from the cities is prone to health risks.
The Government should not sleep over the matter, but it is time it frames a comprehensive policy to deal with it in the future.
In case we cannot tackle this issue in right earnest, it may become a serious environmental issue.
Yours etc…
Sunil Sharma
