Wani for sustainable development within available resources

JAMMU, Sept 15: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu   Centre today celebrated 46th Engineers’ Day here with the Minister for Roads & Buildings and Mechanical Engineering Abdul Majid Wani as the chief guest.
The Minister paid floral tribute to legendary Engineer of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya and highlighted   contributions that the great Engineer made for the development and prosperity of the country, saying that he was internationally recognized as genius in harnessing water resources of the country. He successfully designed and construct several bridges, dams and implemented irrigation and drinking water schemes all over the country, Minister added.
Highlighting the role of time engineering professionals in the society, he called upon them to be innovative and use their skills towards sustainable development within the available resources. He termed engineering community as the valued human resource which contributes in the development of the country by formulating projects of public importance like roads, tunnels, railway lines, water supply schemes and irrigation projects. He called upon the engineer community to follow the footsteps of Sir Visversvaraya and like him contribute in nation building and earn name and fame.
Responding to the demands put forth by the engineers, the Minister said that many of their issues have already been addressed, adding that rest of them would be addressed in a time bound manner.
Er. Bhawna Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Engineering, Government College of Engineering & Technology, Jammu, while paying rich tributes to Sir M. Visvesvaraya highlighted his qualities like austerity, integrity, competence and discipline.
Earlier, Er. Braj Bhushan Sharma, Chairman of the centre presented the welcome address in which the sterling qualities of Sir M. Visvesvaraya were highlighted. Different problems being faced by engineers like stagnation, time bound promotions, removal of structural anomalies in engineering services of J&K and jobs to unemployed engineers were put forth before the Minister, who assured to address the issues in a time bound manner.
On this occasion, Minister presented R. L. Sharma Memorial Gold Medal to Er. B. L. Rawal, and Rudra  Bhagwati Silver Medal to Er. Rajesh Kumar Angural  for presenting best and 2nd best technical papers respectively during the year  2012 – 2013. He also honoured Er. (Dr.) Sameru Sharma, Principal, Gover-nment College of Engineering & Technology, Jammu with D. K. Gupta Engineer of the year award by presenting her a Gold Medallion for her lifetime achievements in the field of Engineering & Technology.
Er. V. K. Bhagotra, former Director, New Jammu Township & former Chairman, The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre was also honoured  by the chief guest for his outstanding services rendered to the engineering profession and to The Institution of Engineers (India) by presenting him a Gold Medallion and Shawl as a mark of respect. The Minister also honoured  Er. S. C. Thukral, Er. P. K. Nanda, Er. B. L. Rawal, Er. Sewa Ram, Er. Deepak Byotra, Er. Rajesh Kumar Angural,  Er. Pooja  Sharma, Parul Sharma and Arjun Singh Kotwal with mementoes for presenting two or more technical papers during the year 2012 – 2013. Yet another memento was presented to Er. Mohinder Singh, for accelerating the membership growth of Jammu Local Centre. First issue of 11th volume of quarterly news letter of Jammu Local Centre was also released by the chief guest on this occasion in presence of Editorial Board members comprising of Er. B. B. Sharma, Er. Rajinder Singh, Er. Anil Verma, Er. C. P. Sharma, & Er. Rabinder Shekher.
The inaugural session was followed by a technical session which was chaired by Er. B. B. Gupta, former Chief Engineer, Mech. Engg. Deptt. & Past Chairman, IEI, Jammu Local Centre in which 7 nos. papers were presented in the shape of Power Point Presentations by Er. S. K. Sharma, Er. S. C. Thukral, Er. P. K. Nanda, Er.  B. L. Rawal, Er. Sewa Ram, Er. Rajesh Kumar Angural and  Parul Sharma on the theme topic “Frugal Engineering – Achieving More with Fewer Resources”.
Er. Anil Verma, former Honorary Secretary of the centre conducted the proceedings of the function and presented vote of thanks to the august gathering and media persons for making the function a grand success.
