Voting begins in Jammu and Kashmir local body polls, first in 13 years.

Jammu : Voting for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir local body elections has begun. Elections are being held for 422 wards of 30 municipal bodies spread across 12 districts of the state. As many as 1,283 candidates belonging to different political parties and independents are in the fray for the first phase. 78 contestants have already been declared elected unopposed.

The polling will go on till 4 pm today.
Municipal elections are taking place in the state after a gap of 13 years. But the two main regional parties, the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), are boycotting the civic body polls over the contentious issue of Article 35A.

It will be a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress in the state, particularly in the Jammu region. The BJP is expecting to sweep the municipal polls in its bastion Jammu. (Agencies)
