Longest bridge over Chenab

It is a matter of some measure of contentment that after many controversies, hurdles and humps, work on the longest bridge over River Chenab in Akhnoor sector in Jammu and Kashmir State has commenced. This 1680 mts bridge will be connecting Pargwal sector directly with Khour Sub Division. A joint venture from Chandigarh having the requisite expertise in construction of long bridges has been selected by the State Roads and Buildings authorities after proper pruning and planning.
A period of 30 months has been given to the company by the State Government for completion of this bridge. It is worth noting that the company has started the work on it as temporary sheds have been erected as also machinery and other equipment moved to the site of the bridge. A joint venture comprising M/s M V Z Constructions from Punjab and M/s V K J Constructions from Chandigarh has bagged the contract of construction of this prestigious bridge. As against the estimated cost of Rs. 177 crore, the work has been managed to be completed with a cost of Rs.120 crore only resulting in net saving of Rs.57 crore. That should definitely sound pleasant to ears of everyone concerned.
Look at it from the defence point of view and the potential assured connectivity between areas, the Jammu centric project of construction of the bridge has the distinction of being the longest bridge in North India. During Pakistani shelling and unprovoked firing there is only one single road connecting Pargwal with Jammu – Akhnoor highway which serves as life line to the people. This bridge on completion shall address that vital issue suitably. The earlier hiccups and problems with its location and other issues stand now fully resolved with a hope to see its completion within the allotted period of time.
