Voters’ Dharma

KAGA BHUSHAUNDI SPEAKETH
Suman K Sharma
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Congress and BJP ‘to know their position’ on government formation in Delhi.  The news item has left me on tenterhooks.  Would the judiciary now take it upon itself to see that the political parties coming together because of a fractured mandate stick to their word for the full term?
‘The judiciary would do no such thing!’ That was Kaga Bhushundi Ji, of course.
‘Ram, Ram, Kaga Ji, but how can you say that?’
‘Because, son, your judiciary has its own task clearly set out before it.  Why should it involve itself in the murky dealings of politicos who ditch their allies to seek the slightest advantage over their rivals?  It is an unwise crow that pokes its beak into the mess created by another crow.’
‘Kaga Ji, we are not talking of crows, wise or otherwise.  Politics is a complex business of humans, in which every segment of the society is involved,’ I reminded the eternal crow.
‘You humans and your complex businesses!’ cackled Kaga Ji. ‘Your twisted minds create problems and then you wreak havoc on everyone else around you to give rise to yet more problems.  Remember Ramayana?  Vishnu Bhagwan decides to disabuse Narad Ji of pride – the pride of his having defeated Kama Deva, the Lord of Lust.  Vishnu Ji takes the form of a pretty princess and maneuvers feckless Narad Ji to fall for the damsel divine.  Strong of faith and sublime in wisdom, Narad Ji lacks a face that could win him the princess.  So the besotted man goes back to Bhagwan Vishnu, begging him to grant him a comely visage.  And what does Param Parmeshwar – the God Supreme do?  He gives the man the face of a monkey….’
‘Kaga Ji,’ I interjected, ‘I will come to you another time for listening to your Ramayana recitation.  Give me the crux of the matter.’ ‘The crux of the matter is that even God should desist from intervening in the matters which don’t need His intervention.  Why should Vishnu Ji have thought of purging Narad Ji of his pride? The sage would have seen his own folly sooner or later.  But God’s will was done.   In the end, it was Vishnu Ji who had to suffer, like any other distraught lover of your kind, the pangs of separation from His consort, Sita Mata.’
‘The problem with you, Kaga Ji, is that you refuse to come out of your Treta Yuga.  Times have changed long since….’
‘But the Dharma – that which makes the world go by – has not.    Each person, every single body, has to acquit their own dharma.   You can ignore this law to your own detriment.’
‘Then, in this election season, what is my dharma as a voter, Kaga Bhushundi Ji?’
‘Voters’ dharma is to ensure that the party coming to power does not have a fractured mandate such as AAM party had in the Delhi elections.’    ‘
