JAMMU, June 26: A two days virtual colloquium on the topic ‘COVID-19 Pandemic and agriculture: Interactions, threats and economic impacts”, concluded today at SKUAST-Jammu.
The colloquium, organized by the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, R S Pura, saw participation of more than 300 scientists, veterinarians and students from all over India.
In his opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu, Dr J P Sharma stressed upon the need of developing a mechanism to protect the farmers from losses under the circumstances of supply chain breakdown such as during lockdown. He insisted that it is the duty of scientists and veterinarians to spread the message that livestock products have no role in spread of infection and are in fact required to improve immunity during pandemic.
Dr Dinesh Bhosale, Regional Sales Director, South Asia, AB Vista; Dr Amit Sharma, Director (Imports), FSSAI, New Delhi and Dr Y P S Malik, ICAR-National Fellow and principal Scientist, IVRI, Bareilly, were the expert speakers in the colloquium. A brainstorming session on ‘Reverse Zoonosis potential of COVID-19’ was also conducted in the colloquium. Dr Mohd Altaf, Professor, SKUAST-K, Srinagar; Dr Mudit Chandra, Scientist, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Dr Sonalika Mahajan, Scientist, IVRI, Bareilly and Dr Ghulam Mohd, Scientist, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, were the panellist in the colloquium.
Dean, FVSc & AH, Dr M S Bhadwal, in his closing remarks, said that pandemic has highlighted the concept of one health and it must become a policy to integrate the human and animal diseases research and diagnosis by bringing their experts on common platform.
Dr R K Sharma, Professor and Head, Animal Nutrition, presented the welcome address. The colloquium ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Ankur Rastogi, Organizing Secretary.
