Violation of environmental laws, increasing financial burden

On the one hand, there are flagrant violations in respect of scientifically disposing off the solid waste by the Municipal Bodies in the UT while on the other, blatant default is made by these Bodies towards paying the Environment Compensation money, as penalty, imposed by the Pollution Control Committee. By not paying the penalty and non adherence to several timelines result in enhanced outstanding financial liabilities in these Bodies . What is adding to the mess is the complete taciturnity of the UT Housing and Urban Development Department .
Despite several show cause notices served on these Municipal Bodies short of stern warnings by the Pollution Control authorities in tune with guidelines of the National Green Tribunal against causing such solid waste to be dumped haphazardly hither and thither in open spaces in open grounds and fields , there is no perceptible improvement coupled with non payment of the penalty imposed as Environment Compensation money. The astonishing part of the matter is no response even to these Show Cause Notices by several CEOs and EOs of the aberrant Municipal Bodies and even after the time limit of 45 days for depositing the penalty , several Municipal Bodies have chosen not to comply with the statutory requirement. While Housing and Urban Development Department is required to take the requisite initiative with other stake holders and government departments very seriously to ensure scientific disposal of the solid waste on permanent and lasting basis, at the same time dumping it in the open should never be allowed.
