JAMMU, Oct 10: The residents of village Paryot in Doda district today blocked the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway for two hours in protest against death of a woman in bear attack.
Reports said that a woman namely Neelam Devi, wife of Veer Singh of Paryot was critically injured by a wild bear when she was cutting grass in the village this morning. She was rushed to hospital by the locals, who reached the spot soon after the incident. However, the woman was declared as brought dead by the doctors.
Angered over the repeated attacks of the wild animals in the village, the people held demonstration on Batote-Doda National Highway this afternoon in protest against the Wildlife Department.
Later, Deputy Commissioner Doda, Bhupinder Kumar rushed to the spot and assured the people that adequate steps would be taken to check man-animal conflicts. On the assurance of the Deputy Commissioner, the villagers lifted the protest and the vehicular traffic resumed on the National Highway.
On the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, a unit of the Wildlife Department was deployed in the village to nab the wild bear, who has created terror in Paryot village. However, no decision was taken with regard to the compensation to the family members of deceased Neelam Devi.
