JAMMU, May 5: Congress candidate for Udhampur Lok Sabha and former MLC, Vikramaditya Singh has urged upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address on priority the issue of malfunctioning of EVMs.
In a statement issued here today, Vikramaditya said that a number of complaints poured in from across the country regarding malfunctioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
He said the complaints of malfunctioning of EVMs have also came from various corners of Jammu and Kashmir where voting delayed for several hours while rectifying/replacing the EVMs. Vikramaditya said many people complained that in several EVMs, choice of buttons for some parties were either missing or not working while in some machines on pressing any one of the choices, the vote registered on the VVPAT was recording it under the BJP’s election symbol.
Questioning the suspicious trend as to why almost all EVM malfunctioning cases were leading to gain and benefit only the ruling party, the former MLC asserted that Bharatiya Janata Party was weakening democratic institutions in the country with a view to suppress the voice of the opposition.
Vikramaditya also mentioned that on April 18 (the polling day of Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat), there were several complaints from voters across polling booths of six districts, regarding malfunctioning of EVMs, alleging that their votes were going to the BJP even if they press the button for another candidate.
“I took up these complaints on the same day with the Election Commission and their Returning Officers but the issue is yet to be addressed by the EC,” Vikramaditya said and appealed the Election Commission of India to take serious note and action, regarding voter complaints and EVM malfunctioning on an urgent and speedy basis in order to ensure free and fair elections.
