Vehicle loaded with Khairwood seized

JAMMU, May 31: In a major crackdown on smuggling of forest produce, a joint team of Jammu Police and Forest Department officials seized vehicle loaded with Khairwood from Gharota area last night.
Official sources said that during a routine naka at Gharota last night, the police and Forest staff intercepted a Bolero pick-up vehicle bearing registration number JK 14E-0210 loaded with illegal Khairwood. The vehicle was signalled to stop by the naka team. However, on seeing the officials, the driver tried to flee.
A chase was initiated, and later the vehicle was abandoned on the roadside. Taking advantage of darkness, the driver managed to escape.
On investigation, it was found that the vehicle was carrying 30 logs and branches of illegal Khairwood weighing around 8 quintals. The consignment was being transported in violation of the Forest Act for illegal commercial gains.
The vehicle along with the seized Khairwood has been taken into custody. An official report has been lodged at the concerned Police Station. After all the legal formalities the seized material and vehicle was handed over to the Forest Department for further action under the Forest Act.
