VC SKUAST -J lays stress on dissemination of latest technologies in dairy farming

JAMMU, July 4: Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu, Dr J P Sharma inaugurated awareness cum animal health camp, organized at border village Abdullian under the DST funded project entitled “Enhancement of Livelihood security among Livestock rearers through Technological Interventions”.
Interacting with farmers of the area, Dr J P Sharma highlighted the relevance of scientific management practices for rearing dairy animals. He said that such programmes will not only help the farmers to educate themselves with recent development but also help university scientists to understand field related problems, so as to frame research priorities. He informed that feed and fodder offered to lactating animals fail to meet their requirement thereby lead to poor production, unsatisfactory growth and infertility. He stressed that nutritional supplements like urea molasses multinutrient blocks (UMMB) prepared from locally available agro-industrial by-products improve nutritional status of animals thereby health and production.
The VC emphasized the need to establish vermicompost and biogas units in the villages so as to utilize manure produced by the animals. Self-Help Groups/ Co-operative societies need to be established for getting benefits of various Government schemes, marketing of milk and branding of local dairy products like milk cake so that huge demand is generated nationwide, he added and expressed desire to establish sale counter for local products at university campus.
On the occasion, six pamphlets, published in Hindi language highlighting managemental practices and common diseases were released by the Vice Chancellor.
A brief introduction highlighting objectives and nature of activities carried under project were presented by Dr Ravleen Kou. Among others, programme was attended by Dr M S Bhadwal, Dean, FVSc & AH, Dr Narunder Singh, Dr Rajiv Singh, Dr Rajesh Agrawal, Dr Punnet Choudhary (I/C KVK), Dr A K Panday, Dr Nazam Khan, Dr V R Moton, Livestock Development Officer, Dr Manmeet Singh, VAS, Department of Animal Husbandry and local representatives.
