US urges citizens to leave Iraq immediately amid escalating security threat

BAGHDAD, Mar 24 : The US Embassy in Iraq has issued a fresh advisory urging American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, citing growing threats from Iran-aligned militant groups and continued risks to public safety.

In an updated notice, the embassy said Iran-backed militias have carried out widespread attacks targeting US citizens and interests across Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The US reiterated its Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, advising: “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave now if you are there.”

While the US Mission in Iraq remains operational under an ordered departure status to assist citizens, the embassy warned Americans not to approach its facilities in Baghdad or the consulate in Erbil due to the ongoing threat of missiles, drones and rocket attacks in Iraqi airspace.

The advisory highlighted that Iran-aligned militias continue to pose a serious threat, having targeted diplomatic missions, businesses, energy infrastructure and other locations linked to the United States. Commercial airports and hotels frequented by foreigners have also been attacked, and there are concerns that militants may attempt to kidnap American citizens.

“US citizens should leave Iraq now. U.S. citizens choosing to remain in Iraq are doing so at significant risk,” the statement said.

The embassy noted that Iraq’s airspace remains closed, with commercial flights suspended. However, overland routes to neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and T rkiye, are open, though travellers should expect long delays.

It added that flight operations from neighbouring countries may face disruptions, with higher fares, cancellations and overbooking likely.

US authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates, stressing that the safety and security of American citizens remains the top priority.
