WASHINGTON, Aug 25 : The US is not introducing new import tariffs against China for its trade partnership with Russia, since the current rate on US imports of Chinese goods is already high, US Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday.
“Obviously, we have a 54% tariff on the PRC [People’s Republic of China] right now, so we have already applied pretty hefty sanctions on the Chinese,” Vance said in an interview with NBC News when asked about why Washington was not imposing secondary sanctions on Beijing as the largest buyer of Russian oil.
The US authorities have had “a number of conversations at all levels of government” to try and persuade China to assist the US in resolving the Ukrainian crisis, the vice president added.
