JAMMU, Dec 4: Regional English Language Officer, US Embassy, New Delhi, Diane Miller visited Model Academy School, the only school in J&K to provide English Access Micro Scholarship programme.
Miller was accompanied by Rachna Sharma, Coordinator Access Program, India.
The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs funds the two year program in India and around the world. Since its inception in 2004, approximately 95,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the Access Program. Students learn about American society and culture, democratic values and attend field trips to enhance their experience.  It provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 13-20 year-olds from economically disadvantaged sectors through after-school classes and intensive sessions. Participants also gain the ability to compete for and participate in future exchanges and study in the United States.
Diane Miller visited the Access classrooms and interacted with the students. She asked them about their studies, posed questions about US culture and history, famous American personalities and enquired about celebrations of different important days.
Miller encouraged them to continue learning and acquiring English language skills and hoped that they would be able to apply for higher education in the United States.
Later the students presented a cultural programme which comprised an English song and an English skit. The students also shared their experiences about the Access programme.
Dr Adit Gupta, Programme Director, assured of providing fullest support in making this programme a grand success.
Nishtha Aggarwal compeered the programme and Purnima Sharma presented vote of thanks.
