Srinagar, May 11: A Capacity Building Tour (CBT) organized by the Army at Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was flagged in today.
A defence spokesnman said Uri tehsil of Baramulla district is one of the remotest regions in the Valley. “Lack of awareness, higher educational facilities and employment opportunities have precluded the general population especially the womenfolk from being an effective part of the national mainstream,” he said.
The spokesman said an effort to mitigate this problem was undertaken by the Army Garrison at Uri, which has focused its Sadhbhavana efforts to “engage, educate, empower and employ” the womenfolk of Uri tehsil.
“A Capacity Building Tour (CBT) comprising of 16 young women from Uri was taken to Bengaluru and Delhi as part of this effort. The focus of this tour was to make the young women from Uri aware about the numerous employment opportunities available to women in the field of science and technology, fashion designing and service industry.
“Most of these young women had never ventured out of their homes. This was their first opportunity to travel across the country and learn about how women in other parts of India are empowering themselves,” he said.
The defence spokesman said that the group was taken to the leading global and national software companies and service industries where women make up a large part of the workforce. “These included Infosys, Oracle, HAL, Metro Cash and Carry and ITC Windsor.
“In addition, the girls also visited the Army Institute of Fashion Designing, Army Institute of Hotel Management and the ASC Centre and College, Bengaluru where a large number of women are employed. In Delhi, the young women visited the Airtel and Indigo corporate offices, where they interacted with a large number of women employees,” he said.
The tour also interacted with the President of India, the Governor of Karnataka and the Chief of the Army Staff. These leaders highlighted the critical role of women in Indian industry and emphasized that gender must not be a barrier to education, employment and emancipation, the defence spokesman added.
