University for Ladakh

Ladakh is one of the three parts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and while both Jammu and Kashmir are having Universities, Ladakh was not considered for having one though geographically the population being scattered over a vast area, there should have been at least one university to cater to the needs of the students there. However, State Administrative Council headed by the Governor Satya Pal Malik has approved full fledged University for Ladakh.
The university will be a cluster of five colleges of Leh and Kargil districts. It will be established with an initial grant of Rs.65 crore which will be provided in the fiscal 2019-20. With the opening of the proposed university, a long pending demand of the people there, especially the student community shall be fulfilled. Needless to add, for pursuing higher studies, students hailing from Ladakh had to seek admission in either Srinagar or Jammu Universities and now since most of the academic disciplines would reportedly be provided in the university itself would prove beneficial for them in terms of saving time, money and not being away from home.
