SRINAGAR, July 23: Vinay Sheel Oberoi, Union Secretary, Higher Education called on Governor, N.N. Vohra, here at the Raj Bhavan today.
He was accompanied by Praveen Kumar, Jt. Secretary, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) and Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE. P.K. Tripathi, Principal Secretary to Governor and Sarita Chauhan, Commissioner/ Secretary, Higher Education were also present.
Mr. Oberoi informed the Governor about the commencement of on-line counseling from today at Srinagar and Jammu for admission of 5000 students of J&K under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme to UGC recognized institutions outside the State. The admissions are open to various courses under Engineering, Medicine, Sciences, Humanities and Commerce disciplines.
The Union Secretary also informed the Governor about various measures being taken by the MHRD for the advancement of higher education in the country. The Governor stressed the need for improving the quality of higher education in the State and sought MHRD’s sustained support in this regard. Issues relating to the implementation of Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) and strengthening of infrastructure of the Universities in the State were also discussed.
Ramesh Arora and Dr. G.M. Veeri, Members of the State Legislative Council, held separate meetings with N.N. Vohra, Governor, at the Raj Bhavan.
Both the Councillors had extensive discussions on issues relating to their areas and about future growth and development of the State.
Prof. Rajat Gupta, Director, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar also called on Governor and briefed him about the ongoing academic programmes at the NIT and the existing infrastructural and other gaps which need to be filled early for making the NIT a centre of excellence.
The Governor stressed the need to ensure that the total number of research projects undertaken by the Institute should include a certain percentage which are aimed at finding practical solutions to identified problems faced in the State.
In this context the Governor referred to the serious challenges which are being faced in the arena of school education, power generation, potable water, stagnant agriculture, horticulture and varied other fields.
A delegation of the J&K Human Welfare Association, Centre for Peace, Development of Humanity and Rehabilitation of ex-Militants, Srinagar, called on Governor
The deputation led by Saifullah Farooq comprised Nazir Ahmad Wani, Bashir Ahmad Lone, Mohammad Ashraf Khan, Naisar Ahmad and Mohammad Sidiq Khan.
The deputation briefed the Governor about various issues relating to the urgent need for the rehabilitation of the ex-militants. The Governor observed that the problems of this Association would be taken up afresh with the State and Central Governments.
