UN Sec-Gen welcomes ceasefire extension, calls it important step toward de-escalation

NEW YORK, Apr 22: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire extension announced by the United States, calling it ”an important step toward de-escalation and creating critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building” between the US and Iran, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

”We encourage all parties to build on this momentum, refrain from actions that could undermine the cease-fire, and engage constructively in negotiations,” Dujarric said in a statement.

He said the Secretary-General supports efforts to facilitate further talks and hopes they lead to a “comprehensive and durable resolution” to the conflict.

Guterres had said on Tuesday that the Middle East confluct has triggered the most severe energy crisis in a generation.

”And it makes one fact crystal clear: fossil fuels are not just wrecking our planet – they are holding economies hostage,” he said.
