UGC approves two supernumerary seats for JK students

SRINAGAR, Oct 25: In a significant development, University Grants Commission (UGC), has approved the provision of two seats for the students of J&K, under supernumerary quota, in the Universities and Colleges outside the State.
A communiqué received by the Central University of Kashmir (CUK), Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid from UGC reads that on the recommendations of the Expert Group, the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), is implementing a special scholarship scheme for the students of J&K.
During the Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting held on August 23, 2012, it was decided that these students may be accommodated by creating two seats under supernumerary quota across the institutions.
The matter was taken up by UGC in its meeting on September 6, 2012 and after due deliberations, the commission accorded its approval for creation of two seats in all institutions.
“Under the scheme, students from J&K, who secure admission in the recognized institution of higher learning, will be provided scholarship to cover tuition fees, hostel fees, cost of books and other incidental charges,” the communique states.
Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid said the decision would provide an ample opportunity to students to get quality education in reputed institutions of their choice. He advised the students to directly contact and approach the authorities of the respective institutions for securing their admission.
