Trump cancels signing of Executive order on Artificial Intelligence regulation : Reports

WASHINGTON, May 22: US President Donald Trump cancelled the signing ceremony of his executive order on artificial intelligence regulation, as it would reportedly slow the industry’s development in the United States, ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Selina Wang reported.
“Trump just called off the signing of his AI executive order – hours before the Oval Office ceremony. The order was expected to allow the government to vet the most powerful AI models before public release. He scrapped it because he thinks it slows the US down,” Wang said on X on Thursday.
Later on Thursday, The Washington Post newspaper reported, citing sources, that Trump cancelled his plan to sign the executive order after last-minute phone calls from industry leaders and former AI and crypto czar David Sacks.
Trump decided not to sign the order after the White House had already sent invitations to the heads of leading tech companies for the signing ceremony, the report noted.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Meta (banned in Russia as an extremist organisation) CEO Mark Zuckerberg were reportedly among those who reached Trump. They warned that the new regulation could hinder the development of the technology at the heart of the US economy, the report noted.
Earlier in May, the New York Times newspaper reported that the US government was considering establishing oversight over new AI models.
