JAMMU, Feb 17: Rich tributes were paid to hero of J&K, Jemedar (present day Subedar) Prakash Singh Chib, Victoria Cross at his Memorial at Nad (Akhnoor) by Army and veteran soldiers.
Wreaths were laid by Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma (Retd), Brig Gosain, Lt Col Bana Ram (Retd) and H/Capt Swaran Singh, Vir Chakra. Floral tributes were paid by his family members and numerous veteran soldiers.
Jemedar Prakash Singh was awarded the highest gallantry award by British Govt in 1945 for his conspicuous bravery and determination for repelling the mighty Japanese attack in Burma during World War-II. Singh despite being critically wounded refused to be evacuated and laid down his life thus attained martyrdom.
Victoria Cross was the highest honour given by British. Jem Prakash Singh is the sole Victoria Cross winner of J&K state and is the ‘Pride of J&K’.
Speaking on the occasion, Gen Sharma said that due recognition and honour needs to be given to Jemedar Prakash Singh by making it a State function. Further, he said that along with Gen Zorawar Singh and Brig Rajinder Singh, we need to make Jemedar Prakash Singh as ‘’Dogra Icon and role model.’
