Transporters in Baramulla allege harassment by ARTO staff

SRINAGAR, May 14: Transporters in Baramulla today accused the local transport office of imposing unfair requirements for fitness certificates by demanding that vehicles be registered solely under the drivers’ names.
In this regard, the transporters called a meeting under the banner of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) in which they voiced their concern regarding the ownership requirement for fitness certificates and the lack of respect from the Transport office during a recent District Coordination Committee (DCC) meeting. “We brought these issues to the attention of the committee, seeking resolution and fair treatment,” a transporter said.
During the DCC meeting, transporters expressed their dissatisfaction with the Transport office’s insistence on an ownership requirement for obtaining fitness certificates. “This requirement is unnecessary and discriminatory, and the focus should be on ensuring vehicle safety rather than ownership details,” the transporters said.
Furthermore, the transporters highlighted instances of disrespectful behaviour of Transport office staff. They shared their experiences of facing uncooperative and dismissive attitudes, which hindered their ability to carry out their business operations smoothly.
Acknowledging the seriousness of these concerns, the DCC has taken note of the issues raised by the transporters. The committee members have agreed to investigate the matter and ensure that appropriate actions are taken to address the ownership requirement and improve the behavior and professionalism of the Transport office staff.
