Transport strike affects normal life in Jammu

JAMMU : Normal life was disrupted in Jammu today due to the strike by transporters in support of their demand for a increase in passenger fares.
All the public transport vehicles including buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws went off the roads due to the strike by All Jammu and Kashmir Passenger Transport Welfare Association.
Even, the  private schools’ vehicles were of the road.
“There was total chakka jam (jamming of wheels) of public transport in Jammu city besides other districts except in some areas of Poonch district,” a police official said.
Bharat Bhushan Gupta, a member of the Jammu-Poonch Bus Union said,”It was unanimously decided to go on strike from today, as the Government failed to honour its commitment.”
Till the revision of fare is not done, we will keep pressurising the government, he said.
Transport Commissioner, Saruv Bhagat yesterday had appealed the Passenger Transport Welfare Association Jammu to call off its strike in the best interest of general public but transporters turned it down. (AGENCIES)
