Traffic from Srinagar to Jammu allowed after 3 days on Kashmir highway

SRINAGAR: After being stopped for three days, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, left Kashmir valley for Jammu as only up convoy was allowed for three days from May 2 to allow smooth movement of vehicles, carrying darbar move officials from winter capital to summer capital.
There was only one way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar for three days on the highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police official told.
Only up convoy was allowed for three days from Jammu to Srinagar to allow smooth movement of vehicles carrying darbar move officials from winter capital, where the seat of the government, including office of Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues and top bureaucrats was closed on April 24 after functioning from there during six winter months.
The offices reopened in summer capital, Srinagar today. However, hundreds of passenger and other vehicles, including empty trucks and oil tankers left different parts of the valley to Jammu after three days. The Spokeperson said no vehicle was allowed from Jammu.
Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway has already put into service sophisticated machines and men to remove all hurdles to make it two-way.
Only one-way traffic has been allowed on the highway for the past four months as the road had been damaged at several places due to landslides and soil erosion. The BRO is repairing the road to allow two-way traffic without facing any traffic jam. Chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed yesterday took up the matter with BRO, which has assured to repair the highway.
The highway witnessed frequent closure this winter due to landslides and soil erosion as a result there was shortage of essentials in the Kashmir valley, including fresh vegetables. (AGENCIES)
