JAMMU, Feb 18: Uncemented total hip replacement surgery was performed in Government Hospital Sarwal on a 30-year-old patient who was having a vascular necrosis of femoral head.
The surgery was performed by a team of doctors of Sarwal hospital led by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Nipun Kalsotra and anesthetists Dr Arun Arora, Dr Sindhoor Singh and Dr Neeru Gupta, Jagan Deep (PT) and other OT staff, under supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr Rajeev Sharma.
The patient had multiple medical problems because of being bed ridden for many years. So, giving anesthesia to the patient was also a big challenge. The patient was having pain in his joints and was not able to move his hip joints. Arthritis was so severe that for last three years, patient was not able to walk and sit as his hip joints were fused and there was collapse of the femoral head.
Avascular Necrosis (Osteonecrosis) of the hip is a painful condition that occurs when the blood supply to the head of the femur (thigh bone) is disrupted. As bone cells need a steady supply of blood to stay healthy, osteonecrosis ultimately lead to destruction of the hip joint and severe arthritis.
Elaborating on the disease, Dr Nipun Kalsotra said, “It’s most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50 and often affects the hip. Initially, patient has pain and as the disease advances range of movement of joints is reduced and ultimately as the bone collapses there is total loss of joint function and movements are extremely painful making it difficult to walk or sit.”
