Total Hip Replacement performed successfully in GMC Udhampur

UDHAMPUR, Dec 10: In a significant medical achievement, the orthopedic team at Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur successfully performed a Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery on a patient diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory arthritis affecting the spine and large joints, poses unique challenges in orthopedic surgeries. The surgery was performed by Dr Balvinder Singh (Consultant Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement and Arthroscopic Surgeon (who has done his fellowship from Germany) and he was assisted by Dr Qazi Waris (Assistant Professor, Orthopaedics), Dr Manmeet (Senior Resident), Dr Kunal (DNB Resident) and Rajinder Gupta (Theater Assistant).
The anesthesia was given by Dr Ankita. The surgery was done free of cost under Ayushman Bharat scheme. Total Hip Replacement is an expensive surgery which costs Rs 4 to 5 lakh in private hospitals but due to Ayushman Bharat scheme, it’s done free of cost. The Surgery was done under the supervision of Dr Mritunjay, Principal of GMC Udhampur, Dr BL Chaudary (Medical Superintendent, GMC Udhampur) and Dr Anil Gupta (HoD Orthopaedics, GMC Udhampur).
The Surgery marks a milestone in the Hospital’s commitment to providing advanced medical treatments, even in complex cases. The patient is currently in stable condition and he was made to walk within 24 hours of the procedure.
